Jonathan wrecked Nigeria, Buhari slept; Tinubu broke the promise – Baba-Ahmed

Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, former spokesperson of the Northern Elders Forum, has criticized Nigeria’s recent leaders, accusing them of failure and betrayal of public trust.

In an interview with Channels Television on Tuesday, Baba-Ahmed said former President Goodluck Jonathan ran Nigeria aground, Muhammadu Buhari failed to govern, and President Bola Tinubu has not fulfilled his promise to fix the country.

“We fought against Jonathan because we felt Nigeria deserved better leadership than Jonathan,” he said. “Jonathan governed badly. President Buhari didn’t govern at all.”

Assessing Tinubu’s performance since taking office, Baba-Ahmed said Nigerians had expected change, but instead got “waste, abuse of resources, and corruption.”

“Clearly, the Tinubu administration has failed expectations that it was going to radically improve the quality of governance,” he said. “So much waste, so much abuse of resources and corruption going on.”

He also criticized the basis of Tinubu’s rise to power, referring to his “emi lokan” (it’s my turn) statement.

“Now, you have a president who started on a faulty foot and says: ‘I am going to become president because it is my turn’. Even if you forgive him for making that comment, two years into the leadership of President Tinubu’s government, we judge them by their record,” Baba-Ahmed said.

He said government performance should be assessed based on the lived experiences of Nigerians.

“They will tell you they are doing great with all the World Bank statistics, all the international ratings and everything, but that’s not the only measures you use to measure a government,” he said. “You measure by the way citizens live, and if that is the yardstick by which we are going to measure this administration, then clearly, the Tinubu administration has failed expectations that it was going to radically improve the quality of governance.”
