“I’m Married to a Nigerian Woman—Why Can’t I Get a Passport?” – American Man Laments Nigeria’s Immigration Policy

An American man popularly known as Oyinbo has gone viral after speaking out against the difficulties he’s faced trying to obtain a Nigerian passport—despite being legally married to a Nigerian woman and having two children with her.

In a trending video making the rounds on social media, the man appeared alongside his wife, both clearly frustrated with Nigeria’s immigration rules. He claimed that the system is unfairly biased against foreign men who marry Nigerian women.

According to his findings, a foreign woman married to a Nigerian man is eligible for Nigerian citizenship and can receive a passport relatively quickly. In contrast, a foreign man married to a Nigerian woman must reside in Nigeria for a minimum of 15 years before even qualifying for citizenship.

“It’s not right,” he said, visibly upset. “I’m married, I have children here, I’ve committed to building a life in this country—yet the system won’t recognize me.”

His Nigerian wife added her voice to the criticism, describing the policy as outdated and discriminatory. She urged the Nigerian government to revisit and revise its immigration laws to reflect equality in the modern world, especially as intercultural marriages become more common.

The video sparked widespread conversation online, with many Nigerians agreeing that the policy is unjust. Several commenters called for immediate reform, arguing that citizenship laws should be based on family, contribution, and intent—not gender bias.
