“I’m Igbo By Blood”- Davido Responds To Tribal Criticism Over Close Ties With Igbos

Tribal prejudice remains a significant issue in Nigeria, as seen in a recent online exchange involving Nigerian music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido. A post on the social platform X (formerly Twitter) sparked widespread attention after a user criticized Davido for associating closely with people of Igbo descent.
Davido had shared a tweet featuring veteran highlife singer Bright Chimezie, whom he recently flew into Lagos. He hosted Chimezie at an extravagant dinner and introduced him to Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke. This gesture drew backlash from a fellow Yoruba man on X.
The user, identified as @Yakbel, accused Davido of being too close to people from the South-East and South-South regions, particularly the Igbos. In his tweet, he wrote:
“Davido just dey carry Ibo full body, until when dem betray am before e rest, Yoruba boy dey frolick with Ibos in 2025, they want your head and everything you have to belong to them, you can never satisfy Ibos ooo, IBOs are not people you surround yourself with as a Yoruba man.”
@Yakbel argued that, as a Yoruba man from Osun State, Davido should not have many friends from the Igbo ethnic group. He described Igbos as people who can never be satisfied and warned that they could betray him.
It’s worth noting that Davido maintains close relationships with many individuals of Igbo heritage, including his wife, Chioma, and associates such as Cubana Chief Priest, Ubi Franklin, Asa Asika, and Peruzzi.
Davido reacted by saying; “lol I AM IGBO by blood.”
Davido’s response highlights his rejection of tribal divisions. While he is Yoruba by paternal heritage, his late mother, Dr. Veronica Imade Adeleke, was from Benin City in Edo State, located in Nigeria’s South-South region and home to the Edo (Benin) ethnic group.
