Ijezie celebrates Igbo-Yoruba heritage in new collection

Chimmuanya Ijezie, the Creative Director of ChimmyandCo, has unveiled his latest African-inspired capsule collection— Ezeanaekwu— which pays homage to heritage, community, and sustainable fashion.
According to him, the collection draws inspiration from his father’s traditional chieftaincy title, Ezeanaekwu, which translates to “the king everyone talks about.” He noted that the title signifies more than nobility. “It embodies the essence of home, the warmth of belonging, and the strength of community,” he added.
Reflecting on his upbringing in Lagos, Ijezie recalled the profound impact of his father’s presence at tribal gatherings.
“Dressed in richly woven akwete fabric and elegant lace trousers, my father carried the weight of tradition and pride with every step. His attire transcended clothing; it was a reflection of identity, a connection to his roots, and a symbol of respect for the culture that shaped him,” he said.
The statement added, “The collection aims to bring this spirit to life through a harmonious blend of cultural storytelling and modern design. At its heart are carefully selected fabrics that honour African craftsmanship and sustainability. The akwete woven fabric— a masterpiece of Igbo artistry— is crafted by skilled women who have passed down their weaving techniques for generations. This textile serves as a vital bridge between past and present, connecting wearers to their ancestral legacy.
“The collection also features adire and tie-dye lace, created using traditional Yoruba hand-dyeing techniques. These pieces represent Ijezie’s father’s connection to southwestern Nigeria—a region integral to his life and success. The inclusion of these textiles is a tribute to the Yoruba community that embraced him, blending its influence with his Igbo heritage.”
