ICT Day: Girls Need Tech Training, Safe Spaces — K-SAFE

As the world marks the International Day of Girls in ICT, the Kano State Accountability Forum on Education (K-SAFE) has highlighted challenges limiting girls’ participation in the digital and tech space.

In a statement released Thursday and signed by Dr. Auwalu Halilu, Co-Chair (CSOs) of K-SAFE, the forum pointed to the need for policies, digital skills training, and safe learning environments for girls across Kano State and Nigeria.

“Technology is shaping the future — and girls must be part of that future,” Dr. Halilu said. He added that despite progress, “too many still face barriers to access, opportunity, and support in ICT fields. We must change that.”

He said K-SAFE is working to improve digital access for girls “regardless of background,” and urged education stakeholders to ensure “safe, supportive learning spaces where girls can thrive in STEM.”

The forum called on communities, policymakers, and educators to address the structural and cultural issues that limit girls’ involvement in technology.

“Let’s invest in their skills. Let’s believe in their ideas. Let’s open the digital doors — because when girls rise in ICT, communities rise with them,” Dr. Halilu added.

The International Day of Girls in ICT, observed annually on April 24, aims to encourage girls and young women to explore careers in information and communication technology and raise awareness about gender gaps in the digital space.
