Governor Yusuf Resolves Certificate Crisis, Rekindles Hope for Kano Graduates

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has brought relief and renewed hope to graduates who have long been stranded due to the previous administration’s failure to settle financial obligations with foreign universities. His bold and compassionate leadership is now opening new doors for Kano’s youth.

According to Ibrahim Adam, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Information, Governor Yusuf embarked on a crucial trip to Cyprus on December 9, 2024. The mission was clear: to retrieve long-overdue academic certificates for Kano students who had completed their studies at Near East University but were unable to receive their certificates due to unpaid tuition fees.

The affected students, who graduated between 2015 and 2019—many in critical fields like Medicine and Nursing—had their futures put on hold through no fault of their own. Governor Yusuf took decisive action by clearing the outstanding debt of €1.4 million (around ₦2.5 billion) owed to the university on behalf of 84 graduates.

“This situation has been a major setback for our children,” Governor Yusuf stated. “It delayed their dreams and aspirations and deprived our state of professionals whose services we urgently need.”

With the debt now settled, the university is set to release the certificates. Arrangements have been made for them to be delivered to the Kano State Scholarship Board through the Nigerian Ambassador to Turkey—a major breakthrough for the affected students.

Governor Yusuf’s move is not just about resolving a backlog; it reflects his administration’s broader commitment to education and youth empowerment. He has consistently emphasized that investing in the education of young people is key to Kano’s progress.

His efforts are already inspiring a sense of possibility and optimism among Kano’s youth. By addressing the issues head-on and fulfilling his promises, Governor Yusuf is showing that leadership rooted in compassion and accountability can make a tangible difference.

As the certificates return home and graduates prepare to contribute to society, this moment stands as a turning point—one that marks the beginning of a new chapter for Kano’s education sector. Under Governor Yusuf’s watch, the future looks brighter, not only for the graduates but for the entire state.
