From pranks to jokes: How celebs marked April Fools’ Day

On Tuesday, April 1, 2025, the Internet buzzed with pranks as April Fool’s Day took centre stage. Celebrities wasted no time participating, delivering jokes that ranged from hilarious to downright extravagant. OGHENOVO EGODO-MICHAEL takes a look at how some entertainers got in on the fun
Funke Akindele
Nigerians were surprised when popular actress, Funke Akindele, announced online that she was getting married soon. In an Instagram post on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, the actress wrote, “I’m getting married.”
Fans of the actress then flooded the comment section with curiosity and well wishes. However, their excitement was short-lived when she suddenly returned to drop hints that revealed it was a joke. In a subsequent post, Akindele wrote, “April What?………Happy new month, guys.”
DJ Cuppy
Joining the trend was popular disc jockey, Florence Otedola, better known as DJ Cuppy. In a prank post, Cuppy claimed to have created a man using Artificial Intelligence. She went on to list all the unique features of her AI husband. She stated, “After being single for so long, I finally found peace…I’ve decided to create my own Christian husband via AI. His name is ElijahGPT. He leads Bible study, speaks in tongues, sends daily devotionals, asks how my spirit is doing, and never forgets our anniversary. My guy even tithes digitally.”
Many fans believed Cuppy’s prank because a few months ago, she had taken the search for her soul mate a step further when she announced that she was looking for a man on the social media app, LinkedIn.
Wunmi Toriola
Actress, Wunmi Toriola, jokingly stated that she had been called by God and intended to go into ministry. “Good morning, lovers. I have finally heeded the voice of the Lord. I have picked up His call. I hope He helps me in this new ministry. May God bless you all. Love from Evangelist WT.” While some were confused, many fans found this hard to believe as the actress had never talked about ministry or shown any intention of becoming a prophet. Fans later understood that it was a joke.
Bobrisky
It came as a shock when controversial cross dresser, Idris Okuneye, aka Bobrisky, claimed that he had been arrested by Nigerian immigration officials. Explaining on his Instagram, Bobrisky wrote, “Guys, I have just been arrested by immigration in Nigeria. I don’t know what I did o.”
The news surprised his fans because a few months ago, Bobrisky had made it known that he had left the country for a “foreign land” where he is now accepted as a woman.
As well wishes continued to pour in for him, he revealed in a later post that he was playing a prank.
Hero Daniels
Talk show host, Ifeanyichukwu Daniels, aka Hero Daniels, made a video asking who was trying to play a prank on him. In the video, Daniels stepped out of his home to a romantic note which read, “I want you to eat me out tonight.” Suspecting foul play, he said, “Let me see you first.” In the video post, he went ahead to write, “Who played this April Fool’s prank on me?”
