Former Oyo Governor Olunloyo Dies at 89

Former Oyo State Governor and renowned mathematician, Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, has passed away at the age of 89.

Dr. Olunloyo died in the early hours of Sunday, just days before his 90th birthday. Born on April 14, 1935, he briefly served as the Governor of Oyo State from October 1 to December 31, 1983.

His death was announced in a statement by a former Editor of the Nigerian Tribune, Barrister Oladapo Ogunwusi.

“With a heavy heart but gratitude to the Almighty, we announce the passing into glory of Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, former governor of Oyo State, mathematician and engineer and renowned technocrat, a few days before his 90th birthday,” Ogunwusi said.

Dr. Olunloyo held the traditional titles of Balogun of Oyo and Otun Bobasewa of Ife. He was also the first Rector of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, and the pioneer Rector of Kwara State Polytechnic, among other notable appointments.

“His long record of service to the nation and humanity is a source of pride to his family and associates even as we come to grip with this devastating event.

“The Olunloyo family will appreciate the understanding of the press and the public as they commence efforts to give him a befitting burial.

“Even from everlasting to everlasting, He is God,” the statement concluded.

Dr. Olunloyo had been the subject of multiple death rumours in recent years, including in June 2022 and April 2024. As of the time of this report, the Oyo State Government is yet to issue an official statement on his passing.
