FG Settles Varsity Workers With N50bn Payment

The Federal Government has released the sum of N50 billion to academic and non-academic staff unions of federal universities as payment for earned allowances, settling a long-standing demand of the unions.

This was announced by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, on Wednesday, who said the payment fulfills a pledge made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The announcement was contained in a statement signed by the Director of Press at the Federal Ministry of Education, Folasade Boriowo, titled “FG Releases N50bn Earned Allowances to Varsity Unions, Tinubu Reaffirms Education Priority.”

Boriowo described the release as “yet another testament to President Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to fundamentally transform Nigeria’s education sector,” emphasizing the administration’s push to transition from a resource-based to a knowledge-based economy.

Minister Alausa said the intervention goes beyond financial compensation, adding, “It is a reaffirmation of our President’s belief in the potential of Nigerian youth and the invaluable role that academic and non-academic staff play in nurturing them.”

He noted that prioritizing the welfare of university workers lays the groundwork for a future where every Nigerian child can access quality and globally competitive education.

Alausa also conveyed President Tinubu’s appreciation to the unions for maintaining peace and cooperation in federal institutions, which has contributed to what is now considered one of the longest stretches of uninterrupted academic activity in recent times.

President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to youth development and uninterrupted academic sessions, saying, “The youth are the heartbeat of our country… Keeping our children in school is non-negotiable. It is my commitment that strikes in our institutions will soon become a thing of the past.”
