FG: No Going Back on Peace in Borno

The Federal Government has vowed not to relent in its efforts to restore and maintain peace in Borno State, following a disturbing resurgence of insecurity in parts of the region.
Minister of Defence, Alhaji Abubakar Badaru, gave the assurance during a high-powered visit to Maiduguri on Friday, alongside the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, and other senior military officers.
The visit was at the instance of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who mandated the team to assess the situation on ground and recommend immediate action.
“This powerful delegation is here on the President’s directive,” Badaru said during a meeting with Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum. “Our mission is to determine what is needed—whether in manpower, logistics, or equipment to stop this new wave of insecurity.”
The Minister reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to safeguarding the progress made in combating insurgency in the region, stating that recent attacks would not be allowed to reverse the gains of over a decade-long fight against Boko Haram and ISWAP.
“The President has ordered us to ensure every necessary resource is made available to halt this disturbing trend,” he emphasized.
Badaru also noted that the increase in violence threatens the return and rehabilitation process of thousands of internally displaced persons, and stressed the urgency of strengthening the security architecture in the North East. He revealed that henceforth, daily security updates from the region would be sent directly to President Tinubu for swift action.
Governor Zulum, in his response, expressed optimism that the visit would rejuvenate the fight against insurgency. He commended the federal government’s resolve and promised continued political support for the armed forces.
“This visit gives us hope. With stronger collaboration and resilience, we can overcome these new challenges,” Zulum stated.
He further called for sustained coordination between the military and political leadership to preserve the relative peace achieved so far in Borno.
“We must ensure that the successes we’ve achieved are not reversed,” he added.
