Fatal Horse Riding Incident Claims Palace Guard in Jigawa

A palace guard has died following an unauthorized horse riding event in Gumel Local Government Area, Jigawa State, police have confirmed.

The incident happened on Saturday, May 24, 2025, around 5:30 p.m., when a group of youths, including Ibrahim Gwani and Goni of Gumel town, organized a horse riding procession without permission.

A resident who witnessed the event, speaking anonymously, said, “The horses were running uncontrollably through the streets, and people were running for safety. It was clear no proper arrangements were made to control the crowd or the animals.”

The Emir’s Palace sent guards to try to restore order. During the intervention, Abdulhadi Kauran Dogaran Gumel, one of the palace guards, was struck by a galloping horse and sustained fatal injuries.

A hospital staff member, who asked not to be named, confirmed, “He was brought in quickly but unfortunately didn’t survive.”

Police have launched an investigation and are searching for others involved in organizing the unauthorized event, some of whom remain at large.

A source within the police force told us, “We want to send a message that organizing such events without approval puts lives at risk and will not be tolerated.”
