EXPLAINER: How Liverpool could clinch Premier League title next weekend

Liverpool could be crowned Premier League champions as early as Sunday, April 20, following Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Brentford on Saturday.

This development has opened the door for Arne Slot’s side to secure the title with time to spare.

The result at the Emirates means the Reds, who currently sit 10 points clear at the top of the table, now require just nine more points from their remaining seven league matches to guarantee the title.

With six weekends of Premier League action left, attention has shifted from whether Liverpool will win the title to when they could be confirmed as champions.

The most immediate possibility is next weekend, provided results go their way.

Liverpool will face West Ham United on Sunday (today), April 13, and then travel to Leicester City on Sunday, April 20 (kick-off 16:30 BST).

If they win both matches, and Arsenal lose away to Ipswich Town earlier on April 20 (kick-off 14:00 BST), the Reds would mathematically seal their second Premier League crown.

Under that scenario, Liverpool would move up to 79 points, while Arsenal, if they lose to Ipswich, would remain on 63 points — with only five games left and a maximum possible 78 points, making it impossible for them to catch up.

If Liverpool does not secure the title next weekend, the focus will shift to the following week’s fixtures.

Should Arsenal beat Ipswich and Liverpool still manage two victories, the gap would be 13 points — with Arsenal sitting on 66 and Liverpool on 79 at the end of Matchweek 33.

That would set up a key fixture on Wednesday, April 23, when Arsenal host Crystal Palace.

A loss or draw for the Gunners could hand Liverpool the title without kicking a ball.

However, if Arsenal keep their slim hopes alive by beating Palace, Liverpool would still have the chance to seal the championship in front of their home fans with a win against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday, April 27.

As it stands, the Premier League title is Liverpool’s to lose, and their fate could be sealed as early as next weekend.
