EFCC Seeks Fresh Charge Against Murja Kunya, Sentencing Stalled

The sentencing of popular TikTok personality, Murja Ibrahimi Kunya, has been postponed until May 20, after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) requested to file a fresh charge against her.
Murja, who is facing trial at the Federal High Court in Kano, had earlier pleaded guilty to a one-count charge of allegedly abusing the Nigerian currency.
The case is based on a viral video where she was seen spraying and dancing on N400,000 at a party held in December 2024 at Tahir Guest Palace in Kano.
The court had been scheduled to deliver judgment and sentence her on Tuesday. However, the EFCC’s lawyer, Musa Isa, unexpectedly asked the court for permission to amend the charge.
This move was met with strong opposition from Murja’s lawyer, Abubakar Saka, who argued that changing the charge at this stage could delay the case and affect his client’s right to a fair trial. He also insisted that the defence needed time to understand the new charge.
Despite the objection, Justice Simon Amobeda granted the EFCC’s request, saying the amendment was in the interest of justice. He then adjourned the case to May 20 for further proceedings.
Until then, Murja will remain in the custody of her lawyer under the same bail conditions, which include a commitment to ensure her appearance in court.
