EFCC Arrests Wanted Businesswoman Aisha Achimugu

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Aisha Achimugu, a businesswoman declared wanted for alleged money laundering.

Achimugu, who is the Managing Director and CEO of Felak Concept Group, was picked up by EFCC operatives at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja early Tuesday morning after arriving from London.

Her lawyer, Chikaosolu Ojukwu, confirmed the arrest in a statement to the media, stating that she voluntarily returned to the country and was immediately taken into EFCC custody. According to him, she has since begun a hunger strike in protest.

“She arrived voluntarily and was arrested by the EFCC. She has immediately gone on hunger strike,” Ojukwu said. “Like Nelson Mandela of South Africa and Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar, she is a prisoner of conscience. This phase will surely pass. Nigeria’s rule of law is at the precipice.”

The EFCC had declared Achimugu wanted on March 28 over allegations of money laundering. Just a day before her arrest, the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered her to appear before the anti-graft agency on Tuesday in relation to the case.

Justice Inyang Ekwo, who presided over the matter, also directed the EFCC to bring her before the court on Wednesday.

During Monday’s hearing, Achimugu’s counsel, Kehinde Ogunwumiju, told the court that she was willing to honour the EFCC’s invitation on her return to the country and asked that she be allowed to continue on the previous bail conditions granted by the agency.

However, EFCC’s lawyer opposed the application, describing it as speculative and insisting that Achimugu had already violated the administrative bail conditions earlier granted to her.
