EFCC Arrests Ex-Rep Gudaji Kazaure Over Alleged Funds Linked to Emefiele

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Gudaji Kazaure, a former member of the House of Representatives, over N70 million he allegedly received from former Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, Daily Nigerian reports.

Sources said EFCC operatives picked up Mr. Kazaure on Wednesday, shortly after a Kano High Court lifted an order that had previously halted his arrest.

An EFCC official stated that Mr. Kazaure received N20 million in two payments from an associate of Emefiele, identified as Mr. Eric, purportedly to buy rams for the Sallah festival.

The source added that Mr. Kazaure later received another N50 million from Emefiele, which he claimed was a donation following a fire that damaged his home.

Mr. Kazaure is currently being held at the EFCC office in Kano and may be transferred to Abuja for further investigation and possible prosecution.

It will be recalled that in 2022, Kazaure made allegations against the CBN Governor over an alleged N89 trillion stamp duty fraud, which the Presidency dismissed.

He claimed that a presidential committee, on which he served as secretary, had been established to investigate the funds. According to Kazaure, the committee had the authority to detain individuals implicated in the alleged fraud, including Emefiele.

The Presidency, however, refuted these claims, stating that the committee was unauthorized and had since been dissolved.

The then Presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu, emphasized that the total assets of Nigeria’s banking sector did not amount to N50 trillion, casting doubt on the plausibility of the alleged N89 trillion fraud.
