EFCC Arraigns Man Over Fraudulent Land Sale in Maiduguri

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Maiduguri has taken Alhaji Abba Umar before Justice Aisha Kumaliya of the Borno State High Court over an alleged case of criminal misappropriation involving a plot of land worth N1.6 million.
The arraignment took place on Tuesday, May 13, 2025. Umar is accused of deceiving one Modu Goni Sheriff into handing over the title documents for a 450-square-meter plot of land located at No. BOTP/178, Abbaganaram Housing Estate, Maiduguri.
The property, originally registered under the name Mohammed Goni Umar, was said to have been sold by Umar to a third party without the owner’s knowledge or permission.
According to the EFCC, Umar committed the offence in March 2022 by dishonestly collecting the documents and selling the land for N1.6 million, failing to either return the money or transfer ownership to the rightful owner.
The commission stated that Umar’s actions breached Section 320(a) and are punishable under Section 322 of the Penal Code of Borno State.
When the charge was read, Umar pleaded not guilty.
The prosecuting counsel, S.O. Saka, requested that the court fix a date for trial and remand the defendant in custody.
Justice Kumaliya granted the request, ordering that Umar be held at the Maiduguri Correctional Centre, and adjourned the matter to June 4, 2025, for trial.
