Drug Bust: 60-Year-Old Grandmother, Drug Supplier Nabbed in Kano

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intensified its crackdown on illicit drug activities in Kano, arresting several suspects including a 60-year-old woman and a major supplier of opioids, as part of coordinated operations across the country last week.

According to a statement signed by Femi Babafemi, NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, operatives acting on intelligence intercepted a Toyota Sienna vehicle loaded with large consignments of opioids along the Kano-Ringim road in Gumel town, Jigawa State, around 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 23, 2025. Two suspects, Abba Ibrahim, 28, and Shuaibu Umar, 29, were arrested at the scene.

“Recovered from the Sienna vehicle were 200,000 pills of tramadol 250mg and 217,500 capsules of pregabalin,” Babafemi disclosed.

A swift follow-up operation led NDLEA officers to Kano, where they apprehended 41-year-old Jamilu Muhammad at his residence in Mil Tara, Layin Technical area. A further search uncovered 1,584,000 pills of tramadol 250mg hidden inside a Nissan 18-seater bus and a room in his house.

“This brings the total number of recovered opioids to 2,001,500 pills,” Babafemi stated, describing the seizure as a significant blow to drug trafficking networks operating between Kano, Niger Republic, and Yobe State.

In a separate operation within Kano State, NDLEA officers arrested a 60-year-old grandmother, Safiya Shamsu, at the Samegu area of Kumbotso Local Government Area. She was found in possession of 5.6 kilograms of skunk, a strong strain of cannabis.

Meanwhile, another suspect, Muntari Labaran, 35, was apprehended in the Yelwa area of Dala Local Government Area after officers discovered 100 litres of codeine syrup in his possession.

NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), commended the officers involved for their commitment and vigilance.

“Their efforts are ensuring a fair balance between drug supply reduction and drug demand reduction efforts,” he said, while praising officers across the country for their contributions to the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA).
