Driver Charged With ‘Causing Death By Dangerous Driving’ In Gombe Easter Procession Incident

The Gombe State Police Command has concluded its investigation into the tragic Easter Monday accident in Billiri Local Government Area, where a truck driver rammed into a crowd of Christians participating in a procession, killing five and injuring 21 others.
Police spokesperson, ASP Buhari Abdullahi, disclosed the development in a statement on Friday, revealing that the driver, Usman Muhammed, 28, from Afghanistan Quarters, was found culpable of reckless and dangerous driving that resulted in the fatal incident.
“The driver of the truck, one Usman Muhammed, has been formally charged with two counts: (1) Inconsiderate Driving and (2) Causing Death by Dangerous Driving. The matter has been forwarded to the Chief Magistrate Court 7 for legal proceedings,” the statement read.
The police said the findings showed that Muhammed acted in a manner deemed grossly negligent and dangerous under traffic regulations, leading to the loss of lives during the religious celebration.
ASP Abdullahi expressed appreciation to members of the public who assisted the police with information during the investigation and urged anyone with further inquiries or relevant details to contact the officer in charge of the State Motor Traffic Department at the Police Area Command, Gombe.
He assured the public that the police would continue to provide updates as the prosecution unfolds, reaffirming the command’s commitment to justice and public safety.
