Democracy Day: Nigeria Needs Justice, Not Just Democracy Rituals – Senator Natasha

As Nigeria marked Democracy Day, suspended Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, called on citizens to reflect on the state of the nation’s democracy, insisting that justice—not symbolic celebrations—must be the foundation of the country’s progress.

In a statement on Thursday, Akpoti-Uduaghan urged Nigerians to uphold justice, equity, inclusion, and unity, stating that democracy must offer more than elections and official ceremonies.

“Democracy must bring real development, empower the weak, uphold the rule of law, and protect the dignity of every Nigerian,” she said.

Speaking on the significance of June 12, the Senator described it as “a symbol of our collective struggle for democratic governance” and paid tribute to the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola and others who participated in Nigeria’s democracy movement.

“It is a tribute to the courage of Chief M.K.O. Abiola and the countless Nigerians—known and unknown—who stood firm to defend the sanctity of the people’s will,” she said.

She said any democratic progress must be evident in the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

She also encouraged citizens, especially women and young people, to become more involved in national affairs.

“I urge all Nigerians to remain engaged. Our participation and vigilance are vital in building a Nigeria that serves every citizen, regardless of tribe, religion, gender, or class,” she noted.

Akpoti-Uduaghan said she would continue to support policies that promote fairness.

“Let us not lose hope in our nation,” she concluded. “Let us build bridges across divides and work toward a future where democracy becomes a lived reality for all. Happy Democracy Day, Nigeria. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
