Defection Not a Sin, Kwankwaso Lacks Moral Grounds to Condemn – Kabiru Rurum Replies

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Air Force, Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, has fired back at Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso over recent comments criticizing the defection of key political figures from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing Kwankwaso’s remarks as “distorted, entitled, and ironic.”

In a statement issued on Saturday, Rurum, who represents the Rano/Bunkure/Kibiya Federal Constituency, described the former Kano State governor’s comments as “laughable and hypocritical.”

“In a democracy, disagreements are normal. But distortion of facts and personal attacks under the guise of political commentary must not go unchallenged,” he said.

Kwankwaso, during a meeting at his Miller Road residence in Kano, reportedly described the wave of defections from the NNPP to the APC as a “political sin.” Rurum countered by pointing to Kwankwaso’s own political history.

“This is someone who defected from the PDP to the APC in 2015, returned to the PDP in 2018, and then moved to the NNPP in 2022. If switching parties is a sin, then Kwankwaso himself has a lot to confess,” he said.

Rurum said the decision by himself and other prominent figures, including Senator Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila and Hon. Abdullahi Sani Rogo, Hon. Idrees Dankawu, Rt. Hon. Zubairu Hamza Masu, Hon. Sha’aban Ibrahim Sharada, Hon. Badamasi Ayuba Dambatta, Hon. Nura Muhammad Dankadai, Rt. Hon. Alassan Abubakar Kibiya, and many other prominent NNPP members to return to the APC was driven by prevailing political realities.

“We are not political ornaments who exist for social media hype or cult followership. We are grassroots politicians who earned our mandates through years of community service, direct engagement, and public trust,” he added.

The former Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly also criticized the tone of Kwankwaso’s message, warning that the political tide in Kano is shifting.

“What is truly disappointing is the language he used—full of veiled threats and dismissive undertones, showing a refusal to accept that Kano’s political landscape is evolving. That’s not leadership; that’s entitlement. The era of one man dictating the political direction of the state is over,” he declared.

Rurum further alleged that Kwankwaso had previously sought political favours abroad.

“While he accuses others of aligning with the APC, he was seen in France last year, lobbying for political relevance—not in the interest of Kano people, but for his own survival,” he said.

On the impact of the defection, Rurum said the move has already translated into tangible benefits for constituents.

“Since we joined the APC, we have attracted projects to our constituencies in key areas like education, agriculture, and infrastructure. These are concrete results—not just political slogans,” he said.

He urged supporters to remain focused on service delivery rather than political drama.

“Politics should not be reduced to battles of ego or blind loyalty to personalities. It must remain a tool for development, justice, and a better life for all,” Rurum said.
