Court Cites Public Safety Concerns In Decision To Halt Wike’s Associate Rally In Bayelsa

A Bayelsa State High Court in Yenagoa has temporarily banned a planned political rally organized by associates of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, citing significant security and public safety concerns.

Justice I.A. Uzakah, who issued the injunction Thursday, stated in court documents that the decision was based on intelligence reports suggesting potential disruption of public peace if the gathering were to proceed as planned.

“The court considered evidence presented by the Bayelsa State Attorney General indicating that the proposed rally could escalate existing political tensions in the state and potentially lead to a breakdown of law and order,” a court official familiar with the proceedings told reporters.

The state government’s petition reportedly included assessments from security agencies warning that rival political factions might clash at the event, creating an atmosphere of insecurity for Bayelsa residents.

The restraining order specifically names George Turnah, the lead organizer, Minister Wike, and the police as respondents, prohibiting them from proceeding with the April 12 celebration until the court conducts a comprehensive review of the security implications.

During preliminary arguments, the Attorney General’s office emphasized the state’s responsibility to maintain peace, arguing that political rallies must be conducted within established protocols that ensure public safety.

The court has scheduled April 11 for a full hearing on the matter, where both parties will present their arguments before a final determination is made.
