Buhari’s Nephew Fatuhu Muhammad Takes Over as NASC DG, Vows to Transform Agric Sector

Former Federal Lawmaker representing Daura/Sandamu/Mai’adua Constituency, Fatuhu Muhammadu, has officially assumed office as the Director-General of the National Agricultural Seed Council (NASC).

The handover took place at the NASC headquarters in Sheda, Kwali, Abuja, where the outgoing Acting DG, Dr. Ishiak Khalid, handed over leadership after serving from May 2023 to March 2025. The event was attended by board members and management staff.

In his address, Fatuhu Muhammadu, who is a nephew of former President Muhammadu Buhari, outlined his plans to improve the regulatory system, ensure seed quality, expand seed multiplication, and partner with research institutions and agri-tech stakeholders.

Dr. Khalid highlighted key initiatives during his tenure, including the launch of the SEEDCODEX digital traceability platform, the establishment of seed testing laboratories, and empowerment programs. He also mentioned NASC’s membership in international bodies such as ISTA, the OECD Seed Schemes, and UPOV.

He pointed out the challenges the Council still faces, including limited funding, outdated infrastructure, and the absence of a national seed reserve.

Board Chairman Austin Agada acknowledged the former DG’s contributions and stated that the board would support the new leadership.
