BBC Hausa Editor Jimeh Saleh Resigns

Jimeh Saleh, a veteran journalist and outgoing editor of BBC Hausa Service, has ended his 17-year career with the British Broadcasting Corporation.
In a message shared on LinkedIn, Saleh looked back on his time at the organization and his early interest in journalism, which began in Maiduguri.
“Goodbye, BBC. I have officially earned the sobriquet ‘Ex-BBC,’ after years of dedication to a craft I deeply love. It’s a badge I wear with pride,” he wrote.
Saleh joined the BBC nearly two decades ago and eventually became Editor of the Hausa Service, a role he held for ten years.
In his farewell post, he said his work was guided by what he called “honesty, creativity, and integrity.”
“I cherished every one of my 17 years at this extraordinary institution… It shaped me, it challenged me, and gave me a platform to serve audiences…”
He recalled how, growing up in northeastern Nigeria, he spent time at newspaper stands and libraries and listened to international broadcasts on a transistor radio.
“Long before the internet revolution reached us, that radio was my portal to the world… It brought not just news, but extraordinary human stories to my doorstep.”
He also mentioned the influence of the BBC World Service programme Outlook and how he eventually worked with one of its presenters, Fred Dove.
“It was great knowing and meeting Fred Dove… as a colleague. I knew early on that I wanted to be a journalist, but I could never have imagined that path would take me to London.”
Saleh did not disclose what he plans to do next but mentioned he would host a virtual masterclass for aspiring media professionals later this month.
In his message, he offered advice to those entering the field: “Skill up. A diploma or degree is only the beginning… Understand AI – it’s not here to take your job… Stay rooted in truth and fairness. Journalism without fairness falters, and without truth, journalism falls flat.”
He ended his note by expressing gratitude. “I have nothing but gratitude to Almighty Allah for guiding me through every step, including the turbulence along the way.”
