Bauchi Government Calls on Communities to Apply for New Emirates, Chiefdoms
The Bauchi State Government has invited memoranda from communities seeking the creation of new Emirates, Chiefdoms, or Districts across the state.
The invitation, issued on Sunday, follows promises made by Governor Bala Mohammed during the last election. Communities have from Tuesday, June 10 to Tuesday, July 8, 2025, to submit their memoranda to the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Abubakar Umar Secretariat, Bauchi.
According to a statement signed by Comrade Mukhtar Gidado, Special Adviser Media and Publicity to the Governor, the initiative is meant to “deepen local governance, enhance cultural identity and strengthen the invaluable role of traditional institutions as key promoters and custodians of peace, unity and development.”
Each memorandum must be submitted in 15 copies and include a cover page with the proposed name of the Emirate, Chiefdom, or District, and the current administrative area it belongs to.
Submissions must also include a brief history of the people, population figures with demographic data, information on natural and strategic resources, maps and photographs of boundaries, and signed endorsements from traditional leaders with notary public attestation.
“This call is in response to numerous calls by communities across the State,” the statement reads, adding that it also represents “the fulfilment of promises made during the last election campaigns.”
Sources at the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs say the process is open to all eligible communities.
Observers say the decision may result in changes at the local level, including reestablishing pre-existing identities altered during colonial and post-independence periods.
“This is an opportunity for communities to shape their administrative destiny,” said a traditional leader from Dass LGA who wished to remain anonymous. “We welcome this process and hope it will be carried out with fairness and in the interest of our people.”
