Authorities Warn Public as Millions of Bees Go Loose

Residents of Whatcom County in Washington State have been urged to stay away from a major highway after a truck carrying hundreds of beehives overturned, releasing an estimated 250 million bees into the open.
The truck was traveling through Whatcom County—just 30 miles south of Vancouver, near the U.S.-Canada border—when it overturned, scattering its buzzing cargo and sparking fears of widespread swarming.
“250 million bees are now loose,” the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office posted on social media, adding a stern warning: “AVOID THE AREA due to the potential of bee escaping and swarming.”
Authorities quickly enforced road closures around the accident site while professional beekeepers rushed in to try and recapture the bees and minimize risk to the public.
Beekeeping plays a crucial role in U.S. agriculture, not just for producing honey but also for pollinating crops. It’s common for commercial beekeepers to move their hives across states to support farmers during the growing season.
As recovery efforts continue, officials are urging people to remain cautious and steer clear of the area until the situation is under control.
