Army: No Attack in Maiduguri, Only Heat-Induced Explosion at Giwa Barracks

A loud explosion that rocked parts of Maiduguri on Tuesday was caused by overheating in an ammunition storage facility at the Giwa Barracks, according to the Nigerian Army.
The Army said the incident, which caused panic in the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, was not a terrorist attack but the result of extreme temperatures that caused some munitions to detonate.
“The explosion was due to the current high temperatures in Maiduguri which led to the explosion of some munitions,” said Captain Reuben Kovangiya, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations at Headquarters Theatre Command Operation HADIN KAI.
Emergency services, including the Borno State Fire Service and other fire trucks, responded to the scene.
“With the combined efforts of the Borno State Fire Service Department and other fire trucks from security agencies, the situation has been brought under control,” the statement read.
Troops under Operation HADIN KAI were deployed to the area and other locations.
Captain Kovangiya urged the public to disregard rumors of an insurgent attack.
“The general public is therefore urged to please discountenance any speculation of an attack within the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council and remain calm,” he said.
