Anambra 2025: Ex-APC aspirant Chukwuma clinches YPP ticket

A former governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress, Sir Paul Chukwuma, has emerged as the candidate of the Young Progressives Party for the November 8, 2025, governorship election in Anambra State.
Chukwuma, who recently resigned from the APC, citing irregularities in its primary, secured the YPP ticket through a consensus vote by 374 delegates during the party’s primary held in Awka on Thursday.
The exercise, conducted using the Option A4 method, was supervised by the party’s National Secretary and Chairman of the Election Committee, Vidieno Bamayi.
Bamayi declared that the process was peaceful and followed the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act.
He said that although Chukwuma was the sole aspirant, a formal vote was still held in line with the rules.
He said, “Even though Chukwuma was the only aspirant, the voting process was conducted in accordance with the party’s guidelines. We had only one aspirant, and we still went ahead with a vote in line with the constitution and guidelines of the party.”
Announcing the results, Bamayi declared that Chukwuma secured 366 ‘yes’ votes, with eight delegates voting ‘no’.
He formally declared Chukwuma the winner of the primary.
The National Chairman of YPP, Emmanuel Amakiri, hailed Chukwuma for his potential to expand the party’s reach and enhance its political prospects.
He noted that Chukwuma would bring substantial value to the YPP’s political fortunes.
In his acceptance speech, Chukwuma expressed his gratitude to the party and its members, emphasising that the YPP is a party founded on discipline.
Chukwuma also reiterated his commitment to supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, particularly in advancing his administration’s Hope Agenda.
He said, “The person to fix Anambra State is the man standing before you. I am standing here today, delegating myself to assure you that by the YPP, we will take the mantle of leadership of this state.
“I present myself as a candidate who is aware of what it takes for this election. YPP is making a new change today. Recall, by ranking of political parties in Anambra, YPP is among the top three.
“I appeal to the delegates that I will connect Anambra to the centre, and I will do that with YPP. Anambra is the centre of Igbo land. YPP will rule Anambra. I thank the delegates and other party members who participated in this exercise. YPP is a party of disciplined people, and I am happy to be here.
“Our target is the Government House in Awka. With your support and the grace of God, we will get there. I am in YPP to ensure that Anambra State is represented at the centre of government. It is at the centre where we will secure the opportunities that will uplift our dear state.”
Chukwuma will face the incumbent governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance; Nicholas Ukachukwu of the All Progressives Congress; George Moghalu of the Labour Party; Chioma Ifemulike, Chidi Onyeze of the Accord Party and Jeff Nweke of the Action Alliance in the November poll.
