AKTH: Health Workers Test Negative for Lassa Fever, Only Patient’s Husband Positive

More than twenty health workers at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) who had direct contact with a confirmed case of Lassa fever have tested negative for the virus.
The Chief Information Officer of the hospital, Maryam Aminu Usman, disclosed this in a statement issued to journalists in Kano on Saturday.
She stated that the health personnel, who were temporarily isolated and screened, were all cleared after laboratory results showed they had not contracted the disease.
“None of the medical personnel who had direct contact with the patient tested positive for Lassa fever. This is a result of the high level of diligence and professionalism exhibited by our staff in managing patients,” the statement read.
Confirming the development, the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee of AKTH, Professor Muhammad Abba Suwaid, explained that the response by the hospital’s management helped in containing the situation.
He said the hospital began tracing and isolating those who had contact with the patient—a 22-year-old pregnant woman who was brought to the hospital on April 5, 2025.
“Immediately after confirming the case, we swung into action, isolating those who had close contact with the patient and collecting blood samples for testing,” Prof. Suwaid said.
All those traced and screened—both staff and others—were confirmed negative, with the exception of the patient’s husband, who has since tested positive.
According to the statement signed by Maryam Aminu Usman, “The husband of the patient is the only confirmed positive case so far and is currently receiving care under the supervision of the Kano State Epidemiology Unit.”
