African storytelling goes digital with Echoes Game Jam

The intersection of culture and video games development  is taking a bold step forward as three winning projects from the inaugural Echoes Game Jam prepare to debut at the Lagos Games Week in June. Wubit Studio’s ‘Building Obu,’ Dream Team’s ‘Cradle,’ and Digi-Negus’ ‘Queen Idia’ stood out among eight competing teams, earning recognition for their creative and technical excellence.

More than just games, these projects serve as digital storytelling mediums, offering immersive experiences that bring Nigeria’s rich history to life. ‘Building Obu’ uses augmented reality to highlight the cultural significance of the Obu House Monument, a central symbol of Igbo communal values.

‘Cradle’ transports players into a virtual reality puzzle adventure, challenging them to locate the Oba. Meanwhile, ‘Queen Idia’ celebrates the legendary Benin queen who played a pivotal role in her son’s reign, reinforcing the power of historical narratives through interactive media.

An initiative of Goethe-Institut Nigeria’s ‘Dreaming New Worlds’ project, the initiative brought together creatives from seven African countries—Nigeria, Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Namibia, and Cameroon—to reimagine history through the lens of digital entertainment.

While speaking at the event, the Director of Goethe-Institut Nigeria, Dr Nadine Siegert, emphasised the importance of local storytelling in shaping global narratives.
