Abuse in the Name of Religion Deplorable, Hisbah Must Respect Women’s Rights –Yar’Adua

The Katsina State Ministry of Women Affairs has condemned the alleged assault of a woman by individuals said to be affiliated with the Hisbah Board, calling it a case of gender-based violence.
A video shared on social media shows a woman describing how she was reportedly abused by people acting under the authority of the Islamic moral enforcement agency.
Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hadiza Abubakar Yaradua, responded to the video in a statement.
“As a Ministry entrusted with the protection and promotion of the rights and dignity of women and girls in Katsina State, we categorically condemn all forms of violence against women, especially those perpetrated under the guise of morality or authority,” Yaradua said.
She called the alleged assault “a clear case of gender-based violence (GBV)” and said the Ministry would pursue justice for the victim.
“No woman or indeed any human being deserves to be subjected to the level of brutality alleged in this incident,” the Commissioner said. “This is a clear case of gender-based violence, and as such, it must be treated with the seriousness it deserves.”
Yaradua said the Ministry had begun an investigation and would prepare a report for the authorities.
“We are actively investigating this matter and will gather a detailed report. Once the investigation is complete, we will forward our findings to the relevant authorities for appropriate action,” she added.
She also said the victim would be supported.
“The Ministry stands ready to offer legal, psychosocial, and medical support to the victim and any others affected,” Yaradua said. “Gender-based violence has no place in our society, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to a safe and just Katsina for all women and girls.”
