A Nigerian returnee has accused United Bank for Africa (UBA) of withdrawing ₦150 million from his account following a mistaken claim that he was deceased.
The startling claim was made public during a live video call with human rights activist Gwamnishu Harrison, who has pledged to pursue legal action on behalf of the victim.
The returnee, whose identity remains undisclosed, explained that the incident happened in 2023 while he was residing abroad. During that period, he consistently saved money in his UBA account, making deposits several times a year.
However, after returning to Nigeria, he was shocked to discover that his entire savings had been withdrawn. Bank officials reportedly informed him that the withdrawals were made by individuals who falsely asserted that he had passed away and was buried.
When he confronted the bank for clarification, police officers were already present, prepared to arrest him on allegations of causing a public disturbance. The man clarified that his reaction was one of shock and frustration, which led him to raise his voice.
