A.A Zaura Partners Islamic Clerics to Curb Drug Abuse, Thuggery in Kano

The Kano Central Senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 election, Abdulkarim Abdulsalam Zaura, has appealed to Muslim clerics to preach against the rising levels of drug abuse, thuggery, and criminality in Kano.

Addressing the Ulamas on Saturday in Kano, the founder of the AA Zaura Foundation highlighted the role of Islamic scholars in society and sought their support in the areas of counselling and moral guidance.

Zaura, who recently met with leaders of rival political thugs, hunters, and vigilante groups to end needless attacks and criminal acts, expressed his commitment to offering opportunities for the rehabilitation of drug abusers in Kano.

He explained that as agents of social consciousness and guidance, religious leaders are being engaged to support the foundation in instilling renewed moral behaviour among the youth.

“In continuation of this project and the campaign against drug abuse, political thuggery, and criminality in Kano, we believe the Ulamas have a very important role to play in tackling these issues. They are the voice of the people, they are the voice of God, and they have many effective ways of counselling people.

“Don’t forget, one Ulama or one Imam can change many lives. So, they are part of this project; they are stakeholders. We are looking for different ways to connect with the people. We need them to understand the project and its mission. We had a critical discussion, and they agreed to work out possible ways to end thuggery and drug abuse in Kano.”

Zaura, who contested for the Kano Central Senatorial District under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the 2023 general election, stressed that the mission of the foundation is to bring about meaningful growth devoid of political affiliation.

He expressed readiness to collaborate with concerned authorities, including the state government and security agencies, to rid Kano of drug abuse and criminal tendencies.

“Of course, like I said last week, this is the kind of project I take responsibility for. I am not excluding anyone. The government, private entities, or any individual who feels committed to rescuing Kano is free to join us. This is not a political fight, and it does not belong to Zaura alone. It is a collective responsibility—a big task—and I cannot do it alone.”

“I am a politician, and in all my years in politics, I have never encouraged drug use. Politicians who give thugs any form of drugs to fight their opponents should be discouraged. Some of these thugs are graduates, so why would a politician give them drugs while keeping their own children abroad? It has to stop,” Zaura emphasized.

Worried by the increasing incidences of societal unrest in Kano, Islamic clerics have resolved to jointly find workable solutions to address the menace of criminal tendencies in the state.

Moreover, the religious leaders and other stakeholders also appealed to the relevant authorities to address the root causes of criminality and to create avenues for transforming youthful energy into productive ventures.

In their separate remarks, the Islamic scholars also urged the government to address the rampant cases of drug abuse among married women and young ladies, calling for proactive measures to block the inflow of drugs into Kano.
