Meet Kano’s First Indigene to Lead West African College of Surgeons

Professor Ibrahim Adamu Yakasai, mni, Retired Colonel – Nigerian Army (FSS, MSS), is the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Bayero University, Kano. He is the current Chairman of the Committee of Provosts of Colleges of Medicine in Nigeria, as well as a Governing Council Member of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, Benue State.

He served in the Nigerian Army in various command positions and distinguished himself before retiring as a Colonel, decorated with the FSS and MSS (Force Service Star and Meritorious Service Star).

He is an indigene of Kano City and obtained his MBBS at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He later won a scholarship from the European Economic Commission to pursue his postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom, where he obtained Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and later became a Fellow of the same prestigious college.

Colonel Yakasai obtained a Master’s degree in Medical Education from the University of Winchester and subsequently went to the USA, where he became a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons (FICS, USA) and the American College of Surgeons.

Professor Ibrahim Adamu Yakasai, mni, is the President of the West African College of Surgeons. He was elected as the 33rd President of the College in Bamako, Mali. Professor Yakasai is the first indigene of Kano State to be elected to this prestigious position.

He also served as the Director General of the Hospitals Management Board, Kano State, with an impeccable record of achievement that significantly reduced the maternal mortality rate in the state and improved its poor health indices. He established a residency programme with over 70 residents trained.

His previous appointments in the university include Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Dean of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, and now Provost of the College of Health Sciences.

Yakasai’s zeal for improving medical education has led to his current role on the National Universities Commission Committee reviewing the medical curriculum for undergraduate and PhD programs for medical doctors. He serves as an examiner in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical examinations in Nigeria, West Africa, and the UK.

Professor Yakasai joined the Faculty of Medicine at Bayero University, Kano, in 2003 and was promoted to Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2012. He attended the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru (SEC 41), in 2019, and obtained the prestigious award of Member of the National Institute (mni).

His administrative experience began in medical school, where he served as class representative and a member of the Students’ Representative Assembly at ABU Zaria. He has served on the boards of various teaching hospitals, including Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano, as well as on the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, the Faculty Board of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and as Chairman of the Health Services Committee.

His direct contribution to research includes over eighty original articles published in peer-reviewed journals or presented at academic/professional conferences.
