Ex-APC Vice Chair Salihu Lukman Slams APC, Says Party Has Turned Into a Monarchy

Salihu Lukman, a former National Vice Chairman (North-West) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), criticized the current state of political parties in Nigeria, with sharp words directed at his former party, the APC, which he described as having abandoned its progressive roots and sliding into a “monarchy.”
Speaking on Channels Television’s *The Morning Brief* on Friday, Lukman expressed disappointment in how political parties in Nigeria operate, accusing them of lacking clear ideologies, abandoning their principles, and ignoring their own constitutions.
He said, “Any party whose elected representatives are not accountable is not a party in the classical sense.”
Turning his focus to the APC, a party he once helped build, Lukman explained why he left: “I left when I realized the party had started drifting from the ideals of its founding fathers and the ethos of progressivism.”
He slammed the APC’s current leadership style: “The APC has moved from a party envisioned to be progressive to almost a monarchy. As it is now, the APC mantra is that there will be no internal contest in 2027 — the President is adopted. All their governors are adopted. Legislators are also adopted.”
Lukman expressed hope for the future of Nigerian politics through a new coalition movement that aims to challenge the APC in the 2027 general elections. He believes this coalition has the potential to wrest power from the ruling party.
However, he warned the coalition’s leaders to stay focused and avoid being distracted by personal ambitions.
Lukman emphasized the importance of a transparent and well-structured internal process, saying, “With a well-structured internal culture, candidates to contest on the new platform for the 2027 elections will emerge through transparent contests.”
