Kano Approves NLC Auditorium to Honour Ex-Governor Rimi

The Kano State Executive Council has approved the construction of an auditorium in honour of the late first civilian Governor of the state, Alhaji Muhammadu Abubakar Rimi, as part of projects totaling over N20 billion.
The decision was reached at the second Special Executive Council Meeting held on Thursday, May 22, 2025, under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
According to a press statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, the auditorium will be constructed at the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Headquarters along Katsina Road at the cost of N284.5 million.
“This is in honour of the late Governor of Kano State, Alh. Mohammadu Abubakar Rimi, the first Governor to initiate the celebration of 1st May of every year as Workers Day,” Waiya stated. “It is a legacy project meant to immortalise a leader who championed the rights of workers.”
Abubakar Rimi served as the state’s first civilian governor in the Second Republic. The planned auditorium is expected to be used for labour gatherings and public meetings.
The Council also approved N20.36 billion for infrastructure projects across several local government areas. These include the revocation and re-award of 5-kilometre dual carriageway contracts in Bebeji, Tudun Wada, Garun Mallam, Madobi, and Tsanyawa Local Government Areas—each valued between N3.2 billion and N4.6 billion.
The Council approved the reconstruction of a burnt mosque and Islamiyya school, renovation of facilities in Tiga Gadan (Gezawa LGA), and installation of a borehole with solar-powered water systems. This is expected to cost over N151.8 million.
It also allocated N517 million for the renovation of offices within the Cabinet Office complex.
The government noted the impact of recent rainstorms in Sumaila and Doguwa LGAs. A committee has been set up to assess the damage and propose relief actions.
The Council discussed the vandalised Zawaciki abattoir, a project from the previous administration, and approved the formation of a committee to investigate and provide recommendations, including the construction of a new abattoir.
“The Kano State Government remains committed to delivering on its promises to the people through transparent, accountable, and impactful governance,” Comrade Waiya emphasized.
