Bauchi Police Bust Illegal Fertiliser Production Network

The Bauchi State Police Command has dismantled a network involved in the illegal production of fertiliser and herbicides in the state, arresting five suspects and recovering large quantities of adulterated products and machinery used in the illicit trade.
According to a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, the breakthrough came after operatives from the Command’s Monitoring Unit acted on credible intelligence and apprehended one Muhammad Abubakar at Magaji Quarters, Bauchi, on May 10, 2025.
“He was caught in the market with six bags of suspected adulterated fertiliser and forty-six bottles of fake herbicides,” the police spokesman stated.
A search conducted at his residence led to the discovery of production materials, including empty cartons of assorted herbicides, NPK and Indorama sacks, spoons, charcoal stoves, and sacks containing Ztars and lambda powder.
Upon interrogation, Abubakar confessed and implicated one Abubakar Umar, also of Magaji Quarters, as a co-conspirator.
In a related raid on May 14, 2025, police arrested Anas Abubakar, 32, at his shop on Gombe Road after a concerned citizen tipped off authorities about the ongoing illegal activity. Officers found 44.5 bags of adulterated fertiliser in his possession.
“Anas Abubakar admitted to receiving adulterated materials from Abdulrahaman Muhammad of Bakaro Quarters and confessed to blending them with urea fertiliser,” CSP Wakil said.
The trail led investigators to Ziya’u Bala of Gudum Hausawa, who was found to be supplying raw materials such as moulded kaolin. He cooperated with police and directed them to an illegal factory in Natsira Hamlet near Kangere Village. At the site, officers recovered around 100 bags and heaps of adulterated products.
The statement further revealed that two more suspects, Sama’ila Abdullahi, 34, of Natsira Hamlet, and Mujahid Abdullahi, 32, of Kangere Village, were also arrested. Their facilities were used to produce and sell counterfeit products to Abdulrahaman, who acted as a middleman.
Recovered items included 44 bags and heaps of adulterated fertiliser, 100 bags of moulded kaolin, 12 bags of fertiliser, and one bag of urea fertiliser.
All three illicit production sites were dismantled, and equipment used in the operations was seized.
Assuring the public of justice, the Commissioner of Police for Bauchi State, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, reiterated the Command’s resolve to root out such criminal enterprises.
“The Command remains committed to ensuring justice is served. The law will take its full course, and those involved will be prosecuted accordingly,” CSP Wakil stated.
