NITDA Inaugurates National Cybersecurity Centre at BUK

The Director General (DG) and Chief Executive Officer, National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Mr Kashifu Inuwa-Abdullahi, has inaugurated a National Cybersecurity Centre at Bayero University Kano.
Inuwa-Abdullahi, on Tuesday, during the inauguration, described the centre as a knowledge-driven platform.
According to him, it is designed to equip the nation with the tools, talent, and infrastructure required to safeguard our digital space and empower the next generation of cybersecurity experts.
Represented by NITDA’s Director of the Zonal Coordination Department, Dr Jide Ajayi, he noted that the centre represented a strategic intervention by NITDA to support cybersecurity education and capacity development.
“Research and innovation are essential to achieving the aspirations of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the Minister of Communication Strategic Blueprint.
“Cybersecurity has become a critical enabler of trust in the digital economy. As digital transformation accelerates, so do the risks associated with data breaches, cyber threats, and digital vulnerabilities.
“The centre will support cybersecurity research, facilitate hands-on training, and serve as a resource hub for national and regional stakeholders working to protect Nigeria’s critical digital infrastructure.
“Over the years, NITDA has implemented various programmes and interventions in this region to expand digital inclusion, enhance capacity building, and foster innovation,” he said.
Inuwa-Abdullahi said that NITDA, in collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser, would host Nigeria’s inaugural National Cybersecurity Conference from July 9 to 10, 2025, in Abuja.
The DG commended the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, for his forward-thinking leadership, which continued to propel the sector toward excellence.
He also commended the management of Bayero University for their partnership and commitment to national development through technology.
In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor (VC) of BUK, Prof. Sagir Adamu-Abbas, lauded the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, and NITDA, for their visionary and transformative contribution to the Nigerian education sector.
“This centre is more than just a building.
”it is a symbol of partnership, foresight, and a testament to the Federal Government’s commitment to equipping universities with essential infrastructure for 21st-century education and national development.
The VC said that BUK currently offered Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes in Cybersecurity, and all arrangements had been finalised to commence a PhD programme in the same field.
According to him, the new centre will enhance the quality of teaching, research, and positioning the university as a strategic partner in Nigeria’s digital security architecture.
The VC reaffirmed the university’s readiness to collaborate with the Ministry and NITDA in areas including staff training, research, and policy development.
“May this centre grow to become a beacon of innovation, a driver of digital capacity, and a stronghold for national security in the digital space” he said.
