Court Backs Kano Ministry Over Toxic Emissions Case

The Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has obtained a court order directing OC Agro Ltd to remove its pesticide storage facility from a residential area due to hazardous odours.

The court order followed legal action by the Ministry after ongoing complaints of noxious fumes affecting nearby communities.

The court ruled that OC Agro must remove all sources of the odour and relocate its warehouse to an environmentally zoned area within thirty days.

Prosecution Counsel Barrister Bahijjah H. Aliyu told the court that chemical fumes from OC Agro’s facility posed “a serious public health hazard” to residents. The company did not contest the claims.

The court also directed that the relocation process be supervised by Ministry officials to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.

“Hazardous emissions in or near residential areas will not be tolerated,” Dr. Hashim said. “This ruling sends a clear signal that every business must adhere strictly to our environmental laws.”

The Ministry urged residents to report any incidents of pollution, illegal waste dumping, or other environmental hazards.
