19-Year-Old Girl Commits Suicide Over ‘Low’ UTME Score

- The Odogunyan community in Ikorodu, Lagos State is mourning the loss of 19-year-old Opesusi Faith Timilehin.
- Opesusi reportedly took her own life after receiving a disappointing score on the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
A somber cloud hangs over the Odogunyan community in Ikorodu, Lagos State, following the tragic death of 19-year-old Opesusi Faith Timilehin, who reportedly took her own life after receiving a Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) score that left her deeply disheartened.
Faith, who hailed from Abeokuta in Ogun State but resided in Lagos, had her sights set on studying Microbiology. She became emotionally overwhelmed after seeing a UTME result of 190—far below her expectations and, in her view, insufficient to secure university admission.
According to a close family acquaintance, this wasn’t Faith’s first attempt at the UTME. She had previously taken the exam and performed better, making this year’s outcome particularly devastating.
“She kept saying her previous score was higher and that there was no hope left for her future,” the family friend shared.
Shortly after checking her result on Monday, Faith reportedly ingested a harmful substance known locally as “Push Out.” She was rushed to Kolak Hospital in Odogunyan, but medical personnel were unable to save her. She was declared dead soon after arrival.
In a heartbreaking twist, just 30 minutes after her passing, an email notification arrived offering her provisional admission to study Microbiology—a cruel reminder of a dream that could have been fulfilled.
“The email came through just after her death was confirmed. She had actually been offered admission,” a source close to the family revealed.
Her untimely passing has cast a pall over the local community, where residents remember her as respectful, soft-spoken, and diligent.
Her grieving parents traveled down from Abeokuta to arrange for her burial, while heartbroken neighbors and sympathizers voiced their frustration with the examination system. Many blamed the emotional strain caused by widespread poor performance in this year’s UTME for contributing to the young woman’s despair.
