Why Are Kano Politicians Rushing to Daura for Titles?

A growing number of politicians from Kano State are receiving traditional titles from the Daura Emirate in Katsina State, raising questions about the motives behind the trend.
Recently, Ibrahim Salisu Buhari, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, was turbaned as Iyan Daura, while Senator Baraka Sani, a former Commissioner in the Kano State Ministry of Agriculture, was conferred with the title of Kilishin Daura.
Hon. Alhassan Ado Doguwa, who represents the Doguwa and Tudunwada Federal Constituency, received the title of Sardaunan Hausa Mai Tuta. Nasir Bala Aminu Ja’o’ji, a board member of the Governing Council of the Federal College of Education (Technical), Potiskum, Yobe State, was also honored as Adon Garin Ƙasar Hausa.
The Emirate also extended recognition to Ummussalama Isyaka Rabi’u, daughter of the late businessman Khalifa Isyaku Rabi’u, who was given the title Jarumar Matan Ƙasar Hausa.
Amid speculation that traditional titles are being used to reward wealth and political influence, the Emir of Daura, Alhaji Umar Farouk Umar, dismissed such claims.
He said the titles are only given to individuals who contribute to public service and support their communities.
“This emirate has been conferring traditional titles on those deserving, from both the North and South,” the Emir said. “We honour those who use their wealth and position to help the poor and the downtrodden. Anyone who shows love for the people of Daura, whether Black or White, would be given such honour.”
The increasing number of title recipients from Kano and other states has led to wider discussions on the significance of traditional honors in today’s political landscape. Some interpret the trend as recognition of service, while others view it as part of strategic political positioning ahead of future elections.
