Dr Bashir Aliyu Umar Named New President SCSN

The Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (SCSN) has announced the appointment of Sheikh Dr Bashir Aliyu Umar as its new President.

His appointment follows the passing of the former President, Sheikh Abdul Rasheed Hadiyatullah, who died on Monday.

The announcement was made in a statement signed by the Council’s Secretary General, Malam Nafiu Baba Ahmed, who described the late Sheikh Hadiyatullah’s death as a great loss to the Council and the Muslim Ummah in Nigeria and beyond.

Dr Bashir, who previously served as the Council’s Vice President, was unanimously selected to lead the organisation in accordance with its constitution and long-established procedures.

“We have full confidence in Sheikh Dr Bashir Aliyu Umar’s leadership, scholarship, and his unwavering commitment to the principles of Shari’ah and justice,” the Council said in its statement. It also called on Muslims across the country to continue offering prayers and support as the Council remains committed to promoting Islamic values.

Dr Bashir is a prominent Islamic scholar and expert in Islamic finance. He holds a Ph.D. in Hadith and Islamic Studies from the Islamic University of Madinah and has served on several national and international advisory bodies, including the Shari’ah Advisory Committee of Stanbic IBTC Bank and the Council of Experts on Islamic Banking under the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The Council noted that a new Vice President will be announced soon.
