World Book Day: Literature Can Rescue Nigeria’s Education – Fombina Imprints

As the world marked this year’s World Book Day, Fombina Imprints has called on Nigerian youths and students to reignite their love for reading, saying literature holds the power to rescue the country’s struggling education system.
Speaking at a symposium in Kano, themed “Crisis of Standards, Decline of Reading Culture, and the Challenges of Publishing in the Digital Era: The Place of Books in the Restoration and Transformation of Our Education Sector,” Malam Yunusa Zakaria Ya’u, Managing Consultant of Fombina Imprints Limited, stressed the need to revive reading culture.
Represented by Isa Garba, Malam Ya’u described books as tools that shape values, broaden minds, and guide future generations.
According to him, celebrating World Book Day with students is a strategic way to reconnect young people with reading and help them find purpose in literature.
“We want to bring reading back into the daily lives of our young people—by celebrating authors, engaging with their ideas, and helping students realize the power books have to influence positive change,” he said.
He noted that both physical and digital books should be embraced, urging youths to use their phones to access educational content instead of wasting time on unproductive activities.
“We encourage young people to explore real-life issues through meaningful content, not just entertainment. That’s how we begin to see change,” he added.
Other speakers at the event—educators, publishers, and literacy advocates—also stressed the importance of cultivating a reading culture and supporting local publishing as key steps toward revamping Nigeria’s education.
Students and pupils from across Kano who attended the symposium described the event as eye-opening, saying it renewed their motivation to read and engage with books beyond the classroom.
World Book Day, held every April 23, was established by UNESCO in 1995 to celebrate books as powerful agents of change, creativity, and unity.
