Woman Tells Shari’a Court Husband Abandoned Her During Fasting Period, Seeks Marriage Dissolution

A housewife, Hussaina Musa, on Tuesday, approached a Shari’a court in Rigasa, Kaduna State, seeking to dissolve her marriage to her husband, Hussaini Umar, over allegations of abandonment during marital disputes.

Musa told the court that her husband had left her without food for more than a month, forcing her to seek refuge at her parents’ home. She expressed that the prolonged neglect and mistreatment had led her to the decision to end the marriage, as she could no longer endure the hardship.

In his defense, Umar denied the accusations of abandonment, explaining that he had been away for work in another town. He acknowledged that the couple had a misunderstanding during the fasting period, which he reported to Musa’s elder brother in hopes of resolving the issue. Umar pleaded with the court for more time to reconcile with his wife.

The presiding judge, Malam Muhammad Adamu, adjourned the case to May 8, giving the couple a chance to settle the matter out of court. Judge Adamu also instructed the complainant to bring witnesses if the reconciliation effort fails and the case proceeds further.
