300 Kano Indigenes to Benefit from Barau’s MSc Scholarship Scheme

Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, has officially flagged off a domestic postgraduate scholarship scheme at Bayero University, Kano (BUK), assuring that the selection process will be purely on merit.
Speaking at the inauguration of the screening exercise on Sunday, Barau emphasized the importance of fairness and transparency in the selection of beneficiaries. He warned those handling the screening process against favouritism or compromise, stressing that the goal is to support only the most qualified candidates.
“This programme is devoid of any form of favour and partiality, and selection through the screening must be based on merit. You don’t need to know anybody. I don’t have a candidate, and the process must not be compromised in favour of any candidate because we are doing this to bring out the best candidates,” Barau said.
The scholarship scheme, which targets 300 indigenes of Kano State, is focused on funding Master’s degree programs in Artificial Intelligence and other related fields across selected Nigerian universities. It follows a foreign scholarship initiative recently sponsored by Barau, which supported 1,001 students from Kano to study abroad.
Explaining the rationale behind the domestic scheme, the Deputy Senate President noted that it aims to create more opportunities for those who were unable to benefit from the foreign scholarship.
He also highlighted the need for individuals to support education in Nigeria, saying, “The funding system on education in Nigeria requires concerted support of individuals to complement government efforts.”
Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, commended Barau for his continued commitment to education and human capital development in Kano.
He noted that beyond the scholarship, Barau has made significant contributions to the intellectual growth of the university and pledged the institution’s full support for his philanthropic initiatives.
Also speaking at the event, Chief of Staff to the Deputy Senate President, Professor Mohammed bin Abdullah, outlined the scope of the program. He said the scholarship will cover MSc programs in cutting-edge fields including Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Robotics Technology, Software Technology, Geophysics, Metal and Material Technology, and Oil Exploration.
