Datti to Tinubu: Don’t Run in 2027 If You’re Smart

Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the former Vice Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has thrown a sharp jab at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him not to contest in the 2027 presidential election if he truly considers himself a smart politician.

Speaking during an appearance on Arise TV’s Prime Time political program on Friday, Baba-Ahmed argued that the signs are clear—President Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are on track to lose the next election.

“I expect Tinubu to throw in the towel if he is that smart politician he claims to be,” Baba-Ahmed stated.

Taking a swipe at Tinubu’s political legacy, the Labour Party chieftain sarcastically described the president as a “super smart politician” who has been influential in shaping Nigeria’s presidential race since 2007—culminating, in his words, in a “heist” during the 2023 election.

“He skipped 2007 and jokingly backed Atiku, then made Ribadu a candidate in 2011, supported Buhari in 2015, skipped 2019, and then came for it in 2023—and they stole it. If he’s really that smart, he should see he’s going to lose in 2027,” he said.

Baba-Ahmed also cast doubt on Tinubu’s ability to fulfill his campaign promises, insisting that the APC has consistently failed Nigerians.

“Buhari didn’t develop Nigeria. He didn’t provide security. He didn’t fight corruption. And Tinubu will be no different,” he said.

Looking ahead to 2027, Baba-Ahmed predicted a political awakening among Nigerians that could see the APC ousted from power. He believes voters will rally behind credible alternatives.

“I see the APC losing. I see Nigerians coming together, realizing that if we can’t practice real democracy, then maybe democracy isn’t for us. But once we choose to practice it seriously, bad leadership won’t have anywhere to hide,” he said.
