Kwankwaso’s Return Welcome but Conditional, Says Kano APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State says the rumored defection of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso back to the party is welcome—but not without conditions.

Addressing journalists in Kano on Friday, the party’s state chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas, acknowledged the speculation surrounding Kwankwaso’s possible return and the broader political shifts currently occurring across the country.

“APC, as a political institution under the Renewed Hope Agenda, has embarked on the project of receiving defectors from all political parties,” Abbas said.

He described the potential defection of the former governor and NNPP leader as significant, noting, “This is a welcome development, especially given the fact that the APC remains his last political refuge, as he has successfully severed ties with all other political groupings in the country.”

However, Abbas emphasized that the party’s openness to new members comes with certain expectations.

“Without prejudice to our desire as a party to welcome new entrants, and in respect of the constitutional rights of citizens to belong to political parties of their choice, we wish to state our position as the state chapter of our great party in Kano State,” he said.

According to him, the APC in Kano has already directed its ward chapters to begin registering new defectors, regardless of their political or social status.

“We advise all those desirous of joining our esteemed party to go to their respective wards and register,” he said. “Also, we want to assure our elected party officials—from the ward, local government, senatorial, to state levels—that they will continue to function as provided by the tenure of their offices in the party constitution.”

He added that all members, whether old or new, are entitled to seek elective positions through the party without any special treatment or preference.

Abbas, however, warned that the party is aware some individuals are seeking refuge in the APC not out of loyalty, but out of desperation.

“This is because they have squandered their political goodwill and have become political lepers in the national scheme of things, now looking to the APC for political relevance,” he said.

For such individuals, Abbas made it clear that the APC would not tolerate divisive politics.

“For the avoidance of doubt, let me emphasise that the APC, as a political party, does not and will not encourage or promote the existence of cult-like associations in the name of political activities or groupings,” he declared.

He concluded by demanding a public apology from those who had previously made derogatory remarks against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.

“We unequivocally call on all those prospective defectors who have earlier made derogatory statements against our leaders—President Bola Tinubu and his Vice, Senator Kashim Shettima—to offer a public apology,” he said. “This should be done as a sign of remorse and respect for future relationships.”
