Malami Disowns Tinubu Endorsement, Warns Al-Makura Group Not to Speak for CPC Bloc

Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Dr. Abubakar Malami, SAN, has disassociated himself from the recent endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the 2027 elections by a group led by Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura.

He said the group has no authority to speak on behalf of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) bloc within the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking through his media aide, Muhammed Bello Doka, Malami criticized the group’s claim that CPC stakeholders remain loyal to Tinubu and are not considering leaving the APC. He said only the CPC bloc itself — which was part of the APC merger — could decide its political direction.

“When people mention the CPC bloc, one needs to ask who exactly they are referring to,” Malami said. “Is it people like Al-Makura, Adamu Adamu, Bello Masari, and Farouk Adamu Aliyu, who only recently have been publicly undermining Buhari just to stay politically relevant? These individuals do not speak for the bloc.”

Malami said the endorsement was a personal decision by the Al-Makura-led group and not a representation of CPC loyalists.

Responding to reports that he might be planning to defect to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Malami denied the claims. “He is still a member of the APC,” his aide said.

“Malami remains a key political figure in Nigeria and cannot secretly switch parties. However, he is engaged in wide consultations, and until those are concluded, any talk of defection is premature.”

He said he is still active in politics and will announce his next move in due time.

“Malami, like any Nigerian, has the constitutional right to associate with any political party and seek elective office in Kebbi State,” the aide added.

The statement was in response to a communique released by Al-Makura, former Governor Bello Masari, former Education Minister Adamu Adamu, and others, who declared their support for President Tinubu and restated their loyalty to the APC.

The group said reports suggesting internal discontent or possible defection among CPC members were unfounded.

During a recent visit by APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje to former President Muhammadu Buhari in Kaduna, Buhari stated that every citizen has the right to join any political party of their choice — a comment some observers see as supporting Malami’s position.
