Atiku to Tinubu: Declare Emergency on Your Failed Presidency

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for leaving the country amid worsening insecurity and economic hardship.

In a statement from his media office on Wednesday, Atiku accused Tinubu of disguising a vacation as a working visit while the country faces serious challenges.

He cited killings in Plateau and Benue States, renewed Boko Haram attacks in Borno, and the overall decline in national security as evidence that Nigeria is in a “full-blown state of emergency.”

“On April 2, 2025, President Tinubu left for France on what was described as a two-week working visit. If this had been announced a day earlier, Nigerians would have thought it was an April Fool’s joke. Unfortunately, it’s just another insult to a nation already pushed to the edge,” Atiku said.

The presidency said the trip was not for medical reasons and was meant to review the administration’s achievements. Atiku and other critics say the timing of the trip shows poor judgment and lack of concern for citizens.

“Even if it’s not a medical trip, what is the justification for traveling across Europe while the country is bleeding? This isn’t just negligence—it’s dereliction of duty on a catastrophic scale,” Atiku added.

He said Tinubu has spent 59 days in France since taking office, arguing that the frequent trips show a disconnect from the country’s problems.

“While Tinubu dines under chandeliers in Paris, Nigerians are being slaughtered in their homes, kidnapped on highways, and starved by rising inflation and joblessness. Plateau has become a killing field. Benue is under siege. Boko Haram is regaining territory. The country is collapsing, and yet the president is missing in action,” Atiku lamented.

He said Tinubu should return home and take charge.

“What exactly is Tinubu doing in France that he couldn’t do in Lagos or even Iragbiji? This so-called working visit is just a poorly disguised holiday. The real emergency Tinubu should declare is on his own failed presidency,” Atiku added.
