FG Unveils E-Visa System to Ease Travel, Strengthen Border Security

The Federal Government has announced the launch of a new e-visa system and digital landing/exit cards, a significant shift in Nigeria’s approach to managing international travelers.

On Wednesday, in Abuja, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, introduced the initiative during a meeting with a delegation led by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

This move is expected to have a major impact on both border security and the ease with which travelers can enter the country. Under the new system, applicants will be able to apply for visas online, uploading required documents without the need to visit a consulate.

The system, designed to enhance security, will feature advanced checks aimed at reducing fraudulent activity. Additionally, the traditional manual landing and exit cards will be replaced with digital versions, requiring visitors to fill out their details online prior to their arrival in Nigeria.

The initiative has generated anticipation among travelers, who expect a quicker and more efficient entry process. Keyamo highlighted the collaboration between the Ministries of Aviation and Interior as essential for the system’s success.

Tunji-Ojo revealed that the e-visa system and digital landing cards will officially launch on May 1, 2025. He assured that the new system would streamline the entry process while maintaining stringent security measures, including thorough background checks on all travelers.

With the visa approval process centralized at the Immigration headquarters, authorities are preparing for increased global attention as the system is rolled out. The effectiveness of this new system in balancing security with accessibility remains to be seen.
