Kano Bans Unauthorized Livestock Sales, Launches Digital Tax System for Cattle Dealers

In a bid to curb revenue leakages and streamline the livestock trade, the Kano State Government has announced a ban on the unauthorized and indiscriminate sale of livestock across the state.

The announcement was made during the launch of a new livestock tax collection system by the Kano State Internal Revenue Service (KIRS) at Dakata Livestock Market in Nasarawa Local Government Area.

The Chairman of KIRS, Dr. Za’id Abubakar, represented by the Director of Enforcement and Compliance, Muhammad Abba Aliyu, said the initiative includes the use of Point of Sale (POS) machines for livestock tax collection.

“We have introduced the use of Point of Sale (POS) machines for livestock tax collection to ensure that all transactions are recorded and traceable,” said Aliyu. “This will help eliminate leakages and ensure that the state gets its due share from the booming livestock sector.”

The system restricts livestock trading to markets officially recognized and approved by the government. Sellers operating outside these areas may face penalties.

According to a statement signed by Harisu Abdullahi Balan, Senior Special Reporter to Governor Abba Kabir Yusif on Internal Revenue Services, “The move is part of a deliberate plan to sanitize the livestock trade and ensure that government revenue is collected in an organized and transparent manner.”

“We call on the people of Kano State to cooperate with the government in ensuring the successful implementation of this initiative,” the statement read.
